💊 How a healthcare brand improved patient app engagement with a reusable visual system

A healthcare brand’s patient education app used stock illustrations in mixed styles. The content was solid, but visuals were too detailed, off‑brand, and hard to follow, hurting engagement. We set up a Scientific Brand Image Bank™ (SBIB): brand‑fit templates, a shared library, and simple review notes. Result: clearer visuals, consistent branding, and higher user engagement.

Collection of educational illustrations about the heart and blood vessels, including diagrams of a healthy heart, coronary artery disease, blood clot formation, and a brain.

Problem

  • Stock images in different styles and formats, anatomically inaccurate

  • Visuals too complex and out of focus for the target audience

  • Inconsistent colors and labeling vs. brand identity

  • Rework when updating or adding modules

What the client got

  • Visual language guide and do/don’ts for patient education

  • Starter library covering digestive, cardiovascular, and reproductive systems

  • Simple request → review → publish flow for editors and medical reviewers

  • More positive brand perception from a consistent look and feel

  • Higher user engagement with clearer, right‑level visuals

  • Faster updates using reusable components instead of one‑offs

  • Smoother reviews with built‑in notes and references

What we did:

  • Audited existing app visuals and extracted brand basics (palette, type, iconography)

  • Built templates for recurring assets: condition overviews, pathways, symptom flows, do/don’t infographics

  • Created a component library (organs, systems, icons) aligned to brand colors and readability

  • Embedded quick review notes and references; organized a tagged central library for reuse across app and web

Why it works

  • One source of truth eliminates style drift

  • Brand‑fit visuals, simple, accurate and readable

  • Review notes and search-ability reduce back‑and‑forth and speed releases of comms materials

The Solution for medical education is a Scientific Brand Image Bank™

A branded library of custom medical illustrations designed for your institution, procedures, and educational philosophy. Your team draws from one centralized visual system instead of starting from scratch every time.

What this means for your institution:

  • Reusable assets: Custom illustrations of your procedures used across training, product documentation, and marketing.

  • Faster course development: No more searching for visuals or settling for generic stock images, your team draws from a branded library

  • Learner confidence: Consistent visual language improves comprehension and retention across your entire curriculum

  • Compliance-ready: Every illustration designed to meet medical education, anatomical accuracy and regulatory standards

  • Brand differentiation: Your institution becomes recognizable by its visual signature. When physicians see your illustration style, they know it's from your training program.

Working with Visualmedics was my best collaboration with a visual communications studio so far. They not only delivered the work for the project as requested but went one step further and actually became a part of our team long-term, advising and supporting the project with professional knowledge and creativity.
